How Herbal Mamas Began

My journey with herbs and the natural world started as a young child running through my Grandma Susie’s backyard full of dandelions, clover, and violets. My visits to my grandmother’s home were always an adventure and full of magic, and I spent many years climbing apple trees, picking berries, and creating a make-believe world full of outdoor forts and running through the sprinkler. Later on in life, this love of the natural world was reignited when I began working at a health food store during college, and started to see firsthand how people could restore their health by incorporating holistic methods. Observing people regain their health sparked my fascination with the healing properties of plants and whole foods, leading me to pursue studies in herbal medicine and holistic nutrition. Later, as a young mother, I began to focus more and more specifically on children’s health. I discovered that I had a passion for honing in on the needs of mothers, and helping them and their families stay healthy. Since then, each year I have become more and more amazed and humbled by the plant kingdom, especially the medicinal herbal realm. Each herb is unique, unassuming, and quietly powerful.

I strongly feel that even the most learned herbalists and botanists have only scratched the surface of these botanical wonders' full potential and have so much to learn. What we do know is that these precious plants impact our vitality and well-being and have been used throughout history, and all over the globe, in times of wellness and illness. They fortify and relieve, serving as both tonics and remedies for acute and chronic health situations.

The Western Healthcare Crossroads: A Shift Toward Vitality

At the time of this writing, we face a significant crossroads in healthcare. The Western system often emphasizes eradicating disease over building health. This focus on symptom management rather than promoting vitality and life force means that while prescribed solutions may temporarily alleviate symptoms, they may often weaken our bodies or have adverse side effects. We at Herbal Mamas aim to ignite your passion for exploring the medicinal herbal world and to demonstrate that herbs, alongside nutrition and other lifestyle factors, play a crucial role in achieving health and well-being.

At the same time, herbs are not a silver bullet for health and instead are part of a larger puzzle. True and lasting health comes from drawing on nature’s gifts of whole foods, pure water, and clean air and also finding ways to bring in joy, movement, and gratitude. We also deeply honor and acknowledge that humans can face incredibly challenging health situations that require medical care. And for this service, we are grateful. My hope is that we will begin to see more and more a marriage of the very best of traditional healing methods and cutting edge medical technology. The main focus of this site is to whet your desire to learn about the herbal kingdom and to best assess which parts are useful for your personal journey.

Working with herbs can at first seem daunting, but most herbs are quite safe. That being said, if you're taking pharmaceuticals, it is best to consult a naturopath or functional medicine doctor experienced with both herbs and medications to create your own individualized health approach. Lastly, the words on this website are an account of how herbs have been used traditionally. They are not intended to be taken as medical advice. That being said, there is so much wisdom and empowerment that can be gained from looking at other traditions and how they tended to their people. We hope that you find our content and community inspiring and are excited to learn ways to support our families' health with you.

To your health,

Penelope
